I find lots of metaphors between glass and the human experience. The myriad different colors and transparencies, the soft curves and sharp lines. The passing of luminosity as the sun shifts over the face. The outdoor strength that can weather even the most cutting storms. And the fragility of separateness that can be transformed in grace, order, and union.

My studio is here in Santa Cruz, California. Most of my inspiration comes from walking what I call the Universal Spiritual Path. Among my many beliefs is the notion that the pure essence of all the religious and spiritual movements is to return to living a life of integrity, truth, love, harmony, and union with our source and each other. Not to do harm or make things too complicated. Not to play where angels fear to tread, and to offer our open hearts of charity, service, and compassion to our fellow man.

I hope that my art and philosophy brings to life this message.
Like nature, art says a lot with few words.

Thank you again for appreciating the art, and as always your comments are most inspiring and helpful for my creative process. If you are interested in hearing more about my creative process, or if you are curious to discover together what it may look like to explore the possibilities of acquiring new art for your space, I would be pleased to arrange a phone call or video tour to introduce myself more formally and share with you some of my current work in my studio and gallery.

Thank you, and I hope we can stay connected.
Miles Mathews

Miles Mathews makes contemporary art based in Santa Cruz, California, working across mosaic and painting.

Known for large-scale hand-cut glass mosaics as well as expressive painted works, his practice explores the universal spiritual path and humanity’s relationship to the natural world. Through luminous color, intricate composition, and sacred symbolism, his work translates subtle spiritual experience into embodied form.

Miles’ practice is rooted in devotion. Whether placing each shard of glass by hand or building a painted surface through gesture and layer, his process is both physically demanding and meditative — a disciplined dance between fragility and strength. Like humanity itself, the individual elements may appear delicate; yet in alignment they create something unified, resilient, and enduring.

Themes of innocence, ascension, unity, divine presence, and reverence for Mother Earth recur throughout his work. Eagles in flight, radiant figures, sacred patterns, flowers, and celestial forms emerge through glass and pigment alike, capturing movement through light. In his mosaics, shifting sunlight activates the surface; in his paintings, color and brushwork open a more immediate and atmospheric presence.

Originally trained through hands-on practice and immersion, Miles built his career through direct engagement with collectors, communities, and custom commissions. His works now reside in private homes, meditation spaces, and healing environments, where they serve as both fine art and energetic anchor.

Committed to excellence in craftsmanship and vision, Miles creates works intended to last generations — heirloom pieces for collectors who seek depth, presence, and transcendent beauty.

His evolving body of work continues to expand in scale and ambition, reflecting a singular pursuit: to bring more light, unity, and sacred resonance into the contemporary world.
